Okay so, you launch yourself into Earth orbit and the launch and everything goes swimmingly. HOWEVER...time comes around and mission approaches its end and then and then... the FAA refuses to grant your space thingy "permission to land." This tale of intrigue, or bureaucratic cock-up, is NOT made up nor is it a conspiracy theory spun to geek out the conspiracy theorists. This an actual misadventure being wrought by one commercial space launch company by name of 'Varda Space Industries', they're the folks trying to get their space vehicle back on earth in one corner and the FAA in another corner. FAA is in actual fact, not theory, the Federal Aviation Agency. The Varda space thingy is carrying "mainly pharmaceutical" stuff. Whatever that may in fact be. Varda would like to "land their space vehicle" in the restricted expanse of west desert Utah. That would be a significant expanse of desert that borders Dugway, Utah AND is controlled by the United States military and in particular the U.S. Army. Everyone and I do me everyone is strictly prohibited from entering, attempting to enter, just standing by the side of I-80 and looking in Dugway's direction, and/or trespassing. The military is dead dang serious about their 'keep out directive'. I know from first hand experience about Dugway, the west desert, West Wendover, Wendover, and just about the entire surrounding area. We used to live in Wendover. A truly lovely little west desert burg. We even found a for real and never before worked fossil bed. We DID see some peculiar flying things while we lived in Wendover and when I asked questions about things we'd seen, well, I'm still waiting for some answers. So cool... Anyway, you've evidently got to have an FAA permission slip to launch any commercial space vehicle AND you've evidently got to have an FAA permission slip to re-entry and land on our precious scrap of rock known as Planet Earth. Dang...who knew. Evidently NOT Varda Space Industries. So while the FAA twiddles and keeps Varda on tenterhooks, their space vehicle (Varda's) will hang around in orbit and the vehicle will eventually succumb to Earth's gravity and re-enter Earth atmosphere regardless of whatever it is the FAA is doing. Or not doing. You see, the FAA does not want to be held responsible should something go terribly wrong. Like landing on a school while the little rug sharks are still in class. Yikes...and now for some Thursday machine art. Phone calls and complaints can be made with the FAA and the Varda people will be ever so grateful.

I could suppose that IF there were actual humans on board that commercial space vehicle the FAA might be a shade more attentive to granting a re-entry permit. that is pure speculation on my part. 😐
