Postmodern Empathy Circus

Congratulations to all of us. We've finally achieved the pinnacle of postmodern human evolution, the ability to scroll past a high-definition livestream of a literal genocide, pause for three seconds to feel a completely useless ping of intellectual gloom, and then immediately swipe down to watch a corporate sponsored cat video without missing a single beat.

It’s called "disaffected empathy," but let's call it what it really is, a psychological survival condom for the digital age, protecting our last remaining brain cells from the radioactive sludge of daily reality. We see the horror, we log the data points of human cruelty, and we feel absolutely nothing.

But this structural paralysis isn’t some accidental glitch in the human software. We didn't just wake up one day and decide to become emotionally hollow ghosts. We were engineered this way.

Back in 1961, old Ike Eisenhower gave us that famous, grandfatherly warning about the "Military/Industrial Complex." He told us to watch out for the cozy, corrupt marriage of weapons manufacturers, politicians, and the Pentagon. He thought the danger was just the bombs, the steel, and the flagrant theft of public funds to build better ways to blow people up.

Oh, Ike. Bless your mid-century heart.

You couldn't have imagined the monstrosity your little complex would grow into. This is the Military/Industrial Complex on absolute, weapons grade steroids. It didn't just stop at controlling the foreign policy and the hardware, it bought out the software of our minds.

Today’s complex doesn't just manufacture the missiles, it owns the media network that broadcasts the explosions, the tech platform where you argue about the ethics of the explosion, and the algorithm that serves you a targeted ad for noise-canceling headphones right next to the casualty count. Atrocity is no longer a bug in the system, it is the product.

And because the daily schedule of human depravity now runs for several pages, featuring a relentless rotation of genocides, judicial corruption, flagrant racism, the complex hit a genius breakthrough. They realized they don't need to hide the horror from us anymore. They just need to flood us with so much bulshit our empathy short-circuits.

We are trapped in a digital panopticon where we are forced to witness everything and permitted to change absolutely nothing. So we sit alone in our dark rooms staring at our glowing rectangles, rattling the locks of our cages by hitting a 'like' button or typing a sarcastic comment. The complex gets its engagement metrics, the politicians get their corporate payouts, and we get the cheap laugh of a cynical observation before the next wave of crap-o-la hits the feed.

So keep scrolling, compatriots. Don't forget to leave a thumbs-up on the apocalypse, smash that subscribe button for the collapse of civilization, and whatever you do, don't look your neighbor in the eye ... they might ask you to actually care. Friday machine art is up right about now ...
