High Wholly Daze ...
Friday July 24, 2026 ... it's been 179 years since the mormons invaded the Great Salt Lake Valley. Yep, them's my people. I am through no fault of my own, a direct descendant of the mormon pioneers that were escaping ethnic cleansing by our United States government and local populations of straight up anti-mormon sentiment leading to violence and the deaths of mormon leader Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum along with several other leaders that were lucky to escape alive. June 1844 Carthage, Illinois and it occurred to Brother Brigham that it might be time to pack up the faithful and beat feets to parts outside of the U.S. at the time. Brigham felt that being outside the jurisdiction of the United States and in an isolated and mostly unpopulated Great Basin could be ideal for his followers to sink roots and as any Vulcan might tell you ... "live long and prosper." Which of course the mormons did. No to the question I can hear from all the way out here in the Mojave, I am NOT mormon, have never been mormon, and would be denounced by mormons that I am related to. Long story and not relevant to this here diatribe. The high wholly daze in Utah ... Brigham and his band of intrepid pioneers entered the Valley of the Great Salt Lake on July 24, 1847 and Brig announced from his sick bed, "this is the place." The dear leader of those mormons was indeed sick and riding in the back of a wagon coming down Immigration Canyon, which would of course and these days be the subject of intense ICE Gestapo scrutiny. So the trek from Nauvoo, Illinois began February 1846 and seeing as how February is winter and winter can be brutal when traveling these days, must have been a real drag a way back when. So off the pioneers/refugees went and the rest is church history. With some 'minor recreation of events'. So I became interested in the old family lineage and found out that the family's dealing with mormons began way back and into Palmyra, New York and those ever so inventive Smith's of the famous Joseph's people. Evidently there is some suggestion that the lineage comes directly from Joseph but I've yet to prove that positive. However, one William Madison Wall was a protege of Brigham and good old W.M. was sort of an all around handy man and fix it guy. W.M. even served as missionary to Australia. Yep down under. So W.M. Wall is my somewhere between third great or fifth great grandfather and I did not know that until relatively not so many years back. Talk about surprise surprise surprise. So let's skip the interlude and get to the high wholly daze ... July 24 has always been and continues to be almost sacrosanct among mormons. That is when sick as a dog brother Brigham made it to the disappearing Great Salt Lake Valley and so it goes. Brig did not know how the Great Salt Lake would be defiled in these 'latter days' but that is done and there won't be much left of the lake after maybe a year or so. Another screed for another day. So most of Utah will be closed today as is fitting. I could suppose considering how the 'faithful' put their best go to rodeo clothes on and head for the big July 24 celebration and parade which is an eye popping business and flocks of looky lou's line the streets of Salt Lake City to get a gander at the floats that seem to repeat year after year after year and ... blah blah blah. So in "officially celebrating" the mormon high wholly daze, get on out there and find yourself three or four willing wives and for the wives, remember to stay barefoot and pregnant. THAT is the mormon way for celebrating July 24th. So in honor to my dear and departed direct ancestors and family that may or may not still be alive today ... Friday machine art with a smile on my face and sobriety in my growing older body.
