A Novella - Sardonic Surveillance

 Prologue: The Breakfast Table Fracture

The coffee in a mug is still hot but the morning seems dead. Quiet, calm. The tv is on and there's Charlie, his face is a pale mask under studio lights. His voice faltering and stripped of the comforting professional cadence that usually anchors the morning. Beside him is the empty chair where his co-host should be feels like an omission of safety, The North Tower is an open black throat spewing soot into a sky so blue it looks artificial and then the eye registers those dots. Tiny fluttering punctuation marks dropping against the grid of steel and glass. Real people are plummeting from ninety stories up because the alternative inside that burning box is worse. The mind stalls refusing the data and slams against the screen. This isn't a movie. There are no commercial breaks coming to save you.

Then the second shadow slices through the frame. A low screaming bank, a flash of gray aluminum and the South Tower doesn't just catch fire ... it erupts. The guts of a financial empire are ejected into the calm September air ... filling cabinets, desks, a blizzard of white type paper and the atomized remnants of human physicality raining down onto the pavement below. On the ground the cameras catch the madness. Sirens are screaming in a desperate overlapping chorus of NYPD cruisers and the heavy red fire trucks barrel straight into the falling debris, there are men inside the vehicles riding into an altar of smoke. The panic is palpable, a living breathing weight vibrating through the cathode-ray tube of living room worship. It makes the television feel heavy ho0t and toxic.

And then the sky falls.

Right there, live and up close, the top of the Tower shudders tilting and drops of detritus falling down straight down in a sickening pancake roar of concrete and structural steel. A mountain of grey suffocating dust rolls through the canyons of Manhattan like an unexpected tsunami swelling screaming crowds whole. You are paralyzed at the breakfast counter, seeing an arm, a literal detached human arm flickers on the screen before the camera lens is blinded by the ash. Minutes later the second Tower follows dissolving into the same gray tomb. The sheer reality of it is blinding, more real than anything you've ever witnessed and a visceral numbing that leaves you feeling hollow. Our country has gone insane in a single hour, and as the static hum of the television fills the quiet kitchen you realize the blue sky outside your window will never look the same again. This wasn't just a disaster, this was the birth of 'the fever'.

September has always seemed to have the bluest of skies ...
