Paint The Town Red

The University of Utah's football team, the Utes, are finally going to the Rose Bowl. The Utes put the smackdown on the University of Oregon Ducks in the PAC-12 championship football game and Salt Lake City and parts of Utah went nuts. The Utes win was met with silent disdain in Utah County that plays host to BYU's 'Cougs'. So let the festivities commence in Capitol City and party on to New Year's Day and the Rose Bowl. Who the Utes will play in the Rose Bowl is yet to be determined. Possibly the Utes will play Iowa or Ohio State. I don't usually pay much attention to college football. The Ute's win is different. You see I live not to far from the campus of the University of Utah and the neighborhood I live in is 'Ute' territory. Yes, the University's use of the term 'Ute' is racist and insulting. However the actual and for real First Nation Ute tribe gave their consent to the 'U' to use their name and done is done. Why the Ute Nation would allow their tribe's actual name to be used as a football mascot remains a bit of a mystery. But they did. I'm thinking there may have been an under-the-table cash "donation" made to the Utes but, I can't prove that so we may in fact never know. Money does make the egregious insult tolerable. So good luck and go 'Utes'! The Utah team certainly plucked the ducks. A "sound thrashing" was how one sports writer put the Utes win and there is much grumbling in Oregon on this fine Saturday. One Oregon newspaper headline reads, "Ducks Scalped By Utes!" That's crass to say the least. The Oregon football season is over now and the crying will continue for some days to come. Machine art is next without further mention of college football.
